Expansion Update

Expansion Update

50 North committed to the construction and renovation work long before COVID-19.

Expansion of the building was scheduled to begin in March 2020.  The renovation of the East side of the existing building was to begin later this year.

Due to the unforeseen mandate of closing 50 North because of COVID-19 on March 12, 2020, the 50 North Board of Trustees made the decision to make the most of the required shutdown and fast track the renovation schedule.

The decision to move forward on the renovation now, instead of later this year, was mainly to limit the disruption to our members.

Our members have been asking our staff, “What is going on with construction at 50 North?”

Here is an update:

East Side Renovation

  • Demolition was completed a couple of weeks ago. The rough-in for heating, electrical, and plumbing is now complete. The drywall is about 90% completed and will be ready for painting to begin late next week.

West Side Building Addition

  • All of the concrete footers, concrete foundation walls, stone backfill, and sanitary sewer lines have been completed. Reinforcing steel will be installed and the concrete floor is scheduled to pour next week weather permitting. The wall structure will begin several days later once the concrete has cured enough to safely work on.

East Side Building Addition

  • Currently, we are working on the removal of trees, shrubs, concrete curbs, asphalt paving, and getting ready to dig the basement. The fence will be installed around the West side to help with safety and security. Columbia Gas has completed the installation of our new gas line in order for the basement excavation to begin and it should begin next week.

Parking lot

  • All new light post bases are installed with new conduit lines connecting them to electrical lines.
  • A surge pond was dug.

This work is essential to our ability to meet the growing demand for senior services driven by the growing senior population in Hancock County.  Fundraising to pay for this capital project has been dramatically impacted by necessary social distancing.

As COVID-19 continues to spread, the future for all of us remains unpredictable.  50 North is fortunate to have tax dollars to help keep us going.  However, our operations also rely on income from fee-based services we offer, which contribute to the financial stability of the entire organization.  With forced closure, this income stream has dried up.

How to Help?

Now more than ever, your financial support of 50 North’s operations, and its building and renovation project, is essential to sustain our services to older adults in Hancock County.  Options for giving include gifts of cash, check, appreciated stock and IRA charitable rollovers.  We also welcome the opportunity to talk to you about a planned or an estate gift for the benefit of 50 North.  Cash gifts can be made directly on the 50 North website at or by mailing a gift to 339 E. Melrose Ave., Findlay, OH  45840.  For questions about or assistance with other gift types, please contact Tracy McMath, Development Director at or at 419-722-4961.

We want you to know that you are the reason we do what we do.  We are grateful for your participation and support!
